CNC Programmer – Job Description

A CNC Programmer is responsible for creating, modifying, and optimizing CNC machine programs used to manufacture precision components. They interpret engineering drawings, select appropriate cutting tools, and develop machining processes to ensure products meet quality standards and production requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and edit CNC programs using G-code, CAM software, or conversational programming.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Select appropriate tools, cutting parameters, and machining methods.
  • Set up and optimize CNC machines for efficient production.
  • Perform program testing, troubleshooting, and process improvements.
  • Ensure manufactured parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and engineering teams to resolve machining issues.
  • Maintain program documentation and revision records.
  • Follow workplace safety procedures and quality standards.

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of CNC machining, G-code, and M-code programming.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T.
  • Experience with CNC milling, turning, or multi-axis machines.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam, Fusion 360, SolidCAM, or similar.
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, materials, and machining parameters.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or ITI in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die, Machinist, or a related field.
  • Experience in CNC programming and machining (typically 2–5 years, depending on the role).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and quality inspection tools is preferred.

Work Environment:
CNC Programmers typically work in manufacturing plants, machine shops, automotive, aerospace, and precision engineering industries. The role may involve working closely with CNC operators, machinists, and production engineers to ensure efficient and accurate manufacturing.
